Treating Fibromyalgia with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Diane, was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after a auto accident that left her hospitalized. She developed intense pain in her neck, shoulders and back and was confined to her bed much of the time to cope with the pain. She began taking pain medication, various vitamins, herbs and homeopathic remedies, which lowered the pain enough to manage day by day. 
After giving birth, Diane’s symptoms worsened dramatically and this time, nothing touched the pain. She was chronically fatigued, unable to sleep, severely depressed and unable to function. She went to countless physicians, chiropractors, osteopaths, acupuncturists, but no one could help her this time. Her husband found a physician with portable hyperbaric chambers and brought her in for a session.

Diane immediately went into a deep sleep her first session in a hyperbaric chamber. She came out groggy, but more relaxed and then went home and slept for 10 hours, something she had never done before. After a few sessions, she had more energy, was able to sleep well and had significant reduction in pain and muscle tension. Her depression lifted and she soon went full days without experiencing pain. Diane has been off pain medications for a year and has not needed treatment, other than hyperbaric, to keep the pain away.

Studies have shown that children with Autism may have decreased blood flow through the brain, and more specifically, the sides of the brain.  This can be shown on a SPECT scan (a very special CT scan).  Less blood flow through the brain can be equated with decreased oxygen flowing through the brain as well, since one of the major roles of blood flow is to deliver oxygen to tissues.  By increasing the amount of oxygen carried by the blood stream (more specifically, the plasma), the greater opportunity for oxygen deprived tissue to receive more oxygen.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) affects 1 in 303 children in the U.S. (8,000 new cases every year) making it the most devastating motor disability in childhood. This tragic disorder affects movement, posture and other motor skills and may result in the need for life-long care. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been shown, in some studies, to ameliorate the effects of CP. Many forms of Cerebral Palsy result from a lack of oxygen to the brain. The affected brain tissue, or penumbra, can be recovered or improved by introducing increased levels of oxygen. HBOT has been shown to be a promising treatment with multiple studies reporting improvements with its application. Studies have demonstrated the benefits of HBOT for OP with the following:

Study:

Motor Function Improved with HBOT
A study conducted with 25 participants assessed the effects of HBOT with children diagnosed with spastic diplegic CP. The children were evaluated after 20, one hour HBOT sessions. The results affirmed improvements in gross motor function (three of the five items) using the gross motor function measure (GMFM) and the fine motor function (three of six hand tests) utilizing the Jebsen Test for hand function. Additionally, reduced spasticity in three of the four muscle groups was confirmed by means of the modified Ashworth Scale. All tests were assessed by a physician specializing in CP.

Lester Schuldt had a non-healing wound on his leg for a couple of years. The only option was he was given by medical doctors was to amputate his leg. After coming to Midwest Mild Hyperbarics and participating in a series of mild hyperbaric treatments, the wound healed up (completely) in a matter of two months although improvement was evident after only a few treatments...

Study:

Skin Damage from Ultraviolet Radiation Prevented with HBOT
A study published in 2012 focused on the effects of HBOT preconditioning and its protective properties against Ultraviolet-A (UV-A) induced skin damage. Three groups of hairless mice were exposed to UV-A, three days a week for 22 weeks, with two of the groups receiving HBOT pretreatment either two or four times a week. UV-A exposure amplified skin cell death, signifying elevated levels of skin damage. Pretreatment with HBOT substantially reduced UV-A induced cell death. In addition, HBOT pretreatment prevented skin creasing and maintained skin elasticity.
